Soap The Old Fashioned Way

Traditional Cold Process Soap – Crafted the Old-Fashioned Way

At Tensaw River Soap Company, we make our soaps using the traditional cold process method—a time-honored technique that focuses on quality, patience, and care.

Cold process soap is made by blending oils and butters with lye, creating a natural chemical reaction called saponification. This process transforms simple ingredients into a gentle, skin-loving bar of soap. Once poured and shaped, the soap isn’t ready right away—it must cure for 4 to 6 weeks. During this time, excess water evaporates, the bar hardens, and the soap becomes milder, longer-lasting, and more luxurious to use.

Why does this matter?

Because good soap simply can’t be rushed.

Cold Process vs. Melt & Pour Soap

While both types of soap can be beautiful and smell amazing, the way they’re made—and how they perform—are very different:

Cold Process Soap:

Made completely from scratch with raw ingredients.
Requires a 4–6 week curing time.
Naturally retains glycerin, which helps moisturize skin.
Creates a harder, longer-lasting bar,
Offers a rich, creamy, more natural lather.
Crafted in small batches with full control over ingredients

Melt & Pour Soap:

Made from a pre-made soap base that is melted and reshaped.
Ready to use as soon as it hardens (no cure time).
Typically contains added ingredients to allow melting and shelf stability.
Often softer and may not last as long.
Great for crafting, but less customizable from the ground up

The Tensaw River Soap Difference

We choose cold process because it allows us to create a higher-quality bar with carefully selected ingredients and a formula we trust. It takes more time and effort—but the end result is a soap that feels better, lasts longer, and treats your skin right.

Because around here, we believe the best things are worth waiting for.
